«Cyprus at the Musée du Louvre»

Cyprus Archaeology is the new spotlight at the Musee de Louvre in Paris. One of the largest and most important museums in the world, hosts a new exhibition focusing on Cyprus archaeology and culture, as part of the Cultural Programme of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union of 2026. The Exhibition opening ceremony took place on the 10th of February.

The exhibition was inaugurated by the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Christodoulides, in the presence of the First Lady of France Brigittte Macron, the Deputy Minister for European Affairs Marilena Raouna and the Deputy Minister of Culture Lina Kassianidou, as well as distinguished personalities of France’s cultural life. The exhibition, which will be open to visitors until 22 June 2026, is the outcome of the cooperation between the Deputy Ministry of Culture, of the University of Cyprus, the CYENS Centre of Excellence and the Louvre Museum who have joined forces and made it a reality.

In halls 300 and 316 of the Museum, the Cypriot antiquities of the permanent collection are juxtaposed in a creative manner with 16 selected ancient objects – such as picrolite figurines and terracotta votive statues – that traveled all the way from Cyprus. The exhibition is accompanied by scientifically documented information material, highlighting the historical and cultural framework of the antiquities, as well as the pioneering contribution of the French archaeological missions in Cyprus.

Innovative digital applications, such as 3D representations, interactive screens and augmented reality experiences create a hands-on experience. Poems by great Greek poets, as well as traditional Cypriot songs, are incorporated into the exhibition through digital technology, offering a multidimensional approach to the cultural memory of the island. Public lectures will be held while the exhibition is on.

The exhibition ‘Cyprus at the Louvre’ is part of the Cultural Programme of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2026. It offers an important opportunity to display and promote Cyprus’ ancient culture on a European and an international level.

The catalogue of the exhibition presents a variety of artifacts but also a series of small articles on different thematics and subjects on Cypriot Archaeology. The catalogue of the Exhibition is available here: Exhibition Catalogue
